As we slowly moved room to room, we found no evidence of any of the knights or signs of life. It was as if they just left. The closets were still full of their clothes and armor. Astor’s old room looked exactly as Grace had described it, except for the portrait of her on the wall. Her face had been burned out of the picture.
“Where would they have gone? I didn’t think Rhiannon could order them,” I said.
“She can’t as long as they are protected by the Tree. The goddess protects us with Rhiannon as we protect her from everything else,” he said.
“She wouldn’t have turned on the Tree, would she?” I asked.
“No,” Astor said.
“You sure about that, Carrot Top?” Connie said.
“I like him,” I said.
“Great. Now I have to listen to both of you,” Astor groaned.
“We should go to the Tree,” Tennyson said, staying on target. Party pooper.
“She doesn’t like unannounced visitors,” Astor said. “I should warn her that you are coming.”
“The longer we stay here we give Rhiannon to prepare. I’m sure she knows we are here,” I said.
“Astor, take Levi to the Tree. The rest of us will stay here,” Tennyson said. “Where is the armory?”
“I’ll show you, Father,” Connie said, pulling his father out of the room.
“I’ll see if I can cook up some grub,” Luther said. “Troy, why don’t you and Dominick give me a hand?”
“Yeah, sure,” Troy said. Dominick stared at the scarred painting. “Nick.”
“I’m coming,” Dominick said, then followed his Alpha from the room.
Astor stared out of the room toward the vineyard beyond it. The vines were dried up and dead. The tall fruit trees bore no fruit or even leaves.
“What has she done?” Astor seethed.
“I don’t know, but we will fix it,” I said.
“Grace will have to fix it,” he said.
“No, you will. Summer is yours. She always intended to give it to you.”
“I’m not sure I deserve it. I abandoned them to serve her, thinking that was my destiny. Now look at it.”
“You couldn’t have stopped this. The Queen has gone rogue. She might have killed you in the process. She has proven that her children mean nothing to her. Except maybe Tabitha.”
“Tabitha was always the best of us.”
“She is first life,” I said.
“Yes, I can only speculate that she did something to Remington to persuade her,” Astor said. I couldn’t agree with him. The look in her eyes wasn’t persuasion. It was vehemence. I was afraid of what Tabitha had done to Remington. “It’s going to be a rough walk to the tree in this heat. We should get some supplies.”
“I know a short cut,” Astor said, turning from the devastation of the garden. He walked to what I thought was a closet door. He opened the door and a bright light appeared. “Let’s go.”
He stepped through the door, so I followed him. The barren plain surrounding the Tree looked more like a desert than Summer. The leaves on the Tree drooped with a lack of water. The border of Winter marred snow with sand making a sludge that looked a lot like quicksand.
